세계평화국태민안기원 영산대재, 울산 천만사에서 봉행
2009년 10월 25일 일요일 경상남도 울산시 교외 소재 천만사(주지: 향덕 박승억)에서 세계평화국태민안기원 영산대재가 봉행된다. 세계 30 여개 국가 대사와 선임외교관 그리고 울산광역시 박맹우 시장을 비롯한 사회 각계각층의 지도급 인사 그리고 전국 각지의 유명사찰의 저명한 불교계 지도자 등 총 1,300 여명이 참석한 가운데 열릴 예정이다. 영산재는 5대 불교의식 가운데 가장 규모가 큰 의식이다. 1973년 11월 5일 중요무형문화재 제50호로 지정된바 있고. 올해 9월 30일에는 유네스코(UNESCO) 인류무형문화유산 대표목록(Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity)에 등재된 세계적인 인류유산이기도 하다.
영산재는 석가모니 부처가 영취산에서 설법하던 영산회상을 상징화한 의식절차이다. 영산회상을 열어 영혼을 발심시키고, 그에 귀의하게 함으로써 극락왕생하게 한다는 의미를 갖는다. 영산재의 유래는 석가모니 부처 당시 영취산 (Mt. Gdhrakua) 에서 법화경을 설할 때 묘음보살이 석가모니 부처의 지혜와 덕을 시적인 노래로 부른 것을 후에 영산회상 법화경 설법을 배경으로 형상화 한데서 유래되었다고 구전으로 전하여 오고 있다. 영산재(靈山齋)란 영산은 영산회상의 줄인 말이고, 재의 어원은 범어 uposadha에서 유래된 말로써 스님들의 공양의식을 뜻한다. 영산재는 나무대성인로왕보살 인도 아래 금일 도량에서 재를 베풀어 망자로 하여금 해탈과 극락왕생을, 살아있는 대중에게는 불법의 가르침과 신앙심을 고취시키는 한편 부처님 당시의 영산회상을 금일 도량에 다시금 꾸며, 모든 중생으로 하여금 불법 인연을 짓고 업장소멸과 깨침을 주는데 영산재 목적을 두고 있다.
영산재(靈山齋)는 의식의 절차가 각종 전통문화의 요소를 내포한 음악적, 무용적 요소와 더불어 연극적 요소의 효과를 나타나게 하고 있다. 여기 음악적, 무용적 요소란 의식 진행중에 범음(梵音)과 화청(和唱)등이 음악적 효과를 내고 다른 한편으로는 이러한 불교 음악에 맞추어 바라춤, 나비춤, 법고춤을 추는데, 이는 삼현육각 (三鉉六角), 호적, 취타 등의 각종 악기가 동원되어 같이 연주하게 된다.
무엇보다 중요한 것은 이상의 불교음악 범패(梵唄), 화청(和唱) 등은 한국의 전통적 민속음악인 가곡(歌曲), 회심곡(回心曲)등에 큰 영향을 미치게 되었으며, 바라춤, 나비춤, 법고춤은 민속 무용인 승무, 바라춤등의 근원을 이루고 있다는데서 영산재(靈山齋)의 전통문화적 의미를 알수 있다.
영산재는 몸과 마음과 영혼으로 노래하고 춤추고 기도하는 종교이며 예술이며 철학이고 우리의 '살아 숨 쉬는 불교문화'요, '불교예술의 종합체'요, '문화 콘텐츠가 가능한 불교축제'이기도 하다.
이 영산재는 49재 가운데 하나로 사람이 죽은 지 49일 만에 영혼을 천도하는 의식과 국가의 안녕과 군인들의 무운장구, 큰 조직체를 위해서도 행한다.
영산재에서는 의식도량을 상징화하기 위해 야외에 영산회상도를 내어 거는 괘불이운(掛佛移運)으로 시작하여 괘불 앞에서 찬불의식을 갖는다. 괘불은 정면 한가운데 걸고 그 앞에 불단을 세우는데 불보살을 모시는 상단, 신중(神衆)을 모시는 중단, 영가를 모시는 하단 등 삼단이 있다. 그 뒤 영혼을 모셔오는 시련(侍輦), 영가를 대접하는 대령, 영가가 생전에 지은 탐 ·진 ·치의 삼독의 의식을 씻어내는 의식인 관욕이 행해진다. 그리고 공양드리기 전에 의식장소를 정화하는 신중작법(神衆作法)을 한 다음 불보살에게 공양을 드리고 죽은 영혼이 극락왕생하기를 바라는 찬불의례가 뒤를 잇는다. 이렇게 권공의식을 마치면 재를 치르는 사람들의 보다 구체적인 소원을 아뢰게 되는 축원문이 낭독된다.

이 수많은 노력에도 불구하고 인류는 끝없는 이기심으로 갈등과 반목을 벗어 던지지 못하고 있습니다. 지금도 지구촌 도처에서는 총성이 그치지 않고 많은 사람들이 고통과 굶주림에 지쳐있습니다.
누구나 바라는 평화이지만 쉽게 이뤄지지 않는 평화이기에 소승은 세계평화국태민안기원 영상대재를 봉행하여 평화를 실현하는데 한측을 담당하고자 합니다. 또한 불교계와 더 나아가 인류사회에 새로운 시사점을 주고자 합니다.
이 지구촌, 한지붕에 살고있는 인류모두는 한 형제요, 한가족이라는 것을 인식해야 합니다. 그래서 과거의 투쟁과 반목의 사슬을 끊고 새로운 희망으로 나아가야합니다.
이법회를 통하여 지옥계 영혼의 왕생극락과 이 지구촌에 평화가 깃들고 이 나라는 국태민안하기를 기원합니다.

The Yeongsan-Jae Buddhist Rite is observed at the Cheonman-Sa Buddhist Temple (headed by Chief Abbot Ven. Hyangdeok Park Seung-Hyeok) in the Ulsan Metropolitan City on Sunday October 25, 2009 with the attendance of an estimated total of 1,000 society leaders and Buddhist believers, including Mayor Park Maeng-Woo of the Ulsan city and noted Buddhist leaders from the Jogye Order in Seoul and various other Buddhist temples across the country. Ven. Hyangdeok also invites a number of ambassadors from Buddhist and other religious countries of the world to join the Rite for the benefit of their countries as well as
Originally, the Yeongsang-Jae Buddhist Rite derives from a rite observed by Sakyamuni the Buddha at the Yeongchi-san Mountain (Korean name for Mt. Gdhrakua in India) when he preached Beophwa-gyeong (Sutra of the Lotus). Noted Buddhist Nun Myoeum (Gadgadasvara), or Bodhisattva, recited in a poetic song the wisdom and virtues of the Buddha as well as His Teachings.
Yeongsan-Jae also has the meaning of Gongyang or Uposadha (Offering of Food and/or Flowers to the Elders or the Buddhist Leaders).
The Yeongsan-Jae Buddhist Rite is for Innowang Bosal (The Bodhisattva of Guiding the Way) to lead the deceased souls to Nirvana and into Geungnak (The Paradise) the Way Buddhist Priests) and also to instill in the broad masses the Teachings of the Buddha and help the people sever their link with all evil things and crime and free them from all the worldly worries and agonies.
The Yeongsan-Jae Rite is also noted for its retention of all the elements and details of the traditional Korean music, dance and drama, which include Buddhist songs, Bara Dance (danced with a Buddhist brass gong in each hand), Butterfly Dance, Buddhist Drum Dance, which are performed to the accompaniment of traditional Korean musical instruments such as percussion instruments and horns. These Buddhist music is known to have exerted a great measure influence on the traditional Korean songs, music, dance and musical instruments.
The Yeongsan-Jae songs are sung with body, mind and soul and so are done the Buddhist dance and prayers. Yeongsan-Jae is considered the living legacy of the Buddhist culture and is recognized as the origin of the taditional Korean culture and performing arts.
Yeongsan-Jae is observed with a slight difference depending on the different localities. In some regions, the Yeongsan-Jae Rite is observed on the 49th Day of the Passage of a person, which is considered a favorable day for guiding the deceased into the

I express my heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished guests from within Korea and without, particularly to the Excellencies the members of the Seoul Diplomatic Corps and esteemed leaders of the religious organizations from all parts of the country and the leaders of all segments of society from Seoul and the different localities, for taking precious time out of their busy schedule to attend this Grand Yeongsan-Jae Rite where prayers are offered for the sake of peace and blessings for the world and Korea.

The mankind is working toward achieving an everlasting peace and prosperity. In spite of such an effort, however, the people are far from extricating themselves from endless conflicts and confrontations due to their unreserved selfishness and pursuit of personal gains.
Even at this moment, we hear ceaseless gun shots from all parts of the Global Village and
the people are suffering from hunger and starvation.
Peace is what everyone seeks, but all the same it is an elusive one and we do not have a complete peace. This is why I humbly state that I have prepared this Yeongsan-Jae Rite to contribute attaining peace in the world and, in particular, work toward achieving a new turn
for durable peace in the society of mankind and the Buddhist world.
We in the Global Village are all living under the same roof. All of us are brethren to one
another and members of the same family. We are seeking a cease to all conflicts and we
are seeking to have a new hope.
Through the Yeongsan-Jae Rite, I am praying and seeking to help the deceased souls still wandering in the Nether World to find their way into the Heaven, for peace to return to the world and for blessings and security come to Korea.

Peace is not a gift that comes to us free. Peace is what we get as a result of efforts we
all make jointly.
Today, we have distinguished guests in attendance here who are the champions of peace.
This humble Buddhist priest would like to present his resolve that he will continue to strive for 365 days of the year to attain peace in the world as well as in
conviction that perpetual peace will come to the world.
